About Us: Where Medicine Meets Ministry

"Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’" Matthew 25:40

From a Spark...

Throughout her 15-year nursing career, CrossBridge Founder Melissa Altman often felt pulled to reach further in personal ministry.  She witnessed first-hand the burdens placed on families with sick loved ones, and slowly considered how she could make a difference. After continued reflection, Melissa realized a spiritual calling to start an organization focused on helping families dealing with illness.  The process of obtaining certification as a Faith Community Nurse solidified what would later become CrossBridge’s mission.  The words “Where Medicine Meets Ministry” served as the guide in pulling the vision together.

The Flame Grows...

With help from Pastor Tim Head of the Lighthouse Church in Mount Pleasant, SC, a board of directors was formed and 501(c)(3) status was obtained.  Initial operations were financed by Melissa’s own retirement fund and a few donations.  The first beneficiaries were housed in hotels and borrowed rental properties. In its first year about a dozen families were assisted with housing, meals, and help with funeral expenses.

Fundraising efforts began in earnest in 2008, with the Charleston community showing support right away.  By 2009, CrossBridge was gifted its first permanent-use house by Benjie and Dossie James, who both continue to serve CrossBridge tirelessly.  This brought client families out of hotel rooms and into a more calming, home-like setting. The Jameses later bought two more houses for this use, including the current 3-story, multi-family home, the location of which is kept private to ensure that families are not disturbed.

Keeping the home Fires Burning...

With an average of 35-40 families served each year, CrossBridge relies on two main annual fundraisers: a summer basketball camp for kids, and a 5K/10K fun run and pancake breakfast held in September.  Both events are self-funded, and all monies raised go directly toward benefiting families in need. But sponsors are desperately needed year-round. Our client families risk everything for their children, sometimes to the point of job loss, bankruptcy, and losing their own home while their child fights for their life. It is an unspeakable joy for us to lighten their loads in some way, to love on each family and serve them so they can carry on and focus on their sick child. “You are not alone” is our mantra, and this is what we strive to put into action every day.
